Assessment 2 Reflection 1 - Wiki on mobile phones participation
Wiki link to Group 2
In three groups the cohort participated in a wiki forum that used de Bono’s hats to seek opinions. De Bono’s hats help to encourage all points of view on a particular subject (de Bono, n.d.). The subject discussed on the wiki was about mobile phone activity and its use in the classroom.
I found it difficult to post my opinions as I became self-conscious. My anxiety rose as I kept looking to see if anyone had posted. To respond to this task I began by typing my answers onto a word document. There appeared to be no spell checks on the wiki, this sent my anxiety up a little higher. I believe the task is a valuable lesson for students; however some students may feel as self-conscious as I did and struggle to complete the answers.
The use of de Bono’s hats helps to encourage thinking about all areas of the subject (McAleer, 2011). The wiki may be more useful if students were to revisit the site after a period of time to read all responses. This may help to develop higher order thinking. The students may readdress and make changes to their own comments based on other students’ opinions as well as their own.
The wiki exercise appeared to reflect mostly connectivism as students can participate together regardless of their location (Siemens, 2005). The group participation did not seem to allow for collaboration as it was not possible to discuss opinions together.
In the classroom, it may be beneficial for students to work in mixed ability groups and post their opinions collectively to allow for more collaborative learning. The other option may be to allow students to post anonymously unless the task is assessed. Although every participant in the group was able to post opinions, some may still lack confidence to truly express and elaborate their thoughts and views.
